Thins Mucus and Creates an Inhospitable Environment for Infections
NAC is a biologically active precursor for the amino acid cysteine which, in turn, is a precursor for glutathione, a tripeptide with antioxidant and mucolytic properties.
Function
1. Thins Mucus
Mucus is largely made of mucins, which are very large, gel-forming glycoproteins. These are long, tangled protein chains, forming a sticky, elastic network.
A key feature holding this network together is disulfide bonds. NAC chemically cuts these sulfur “bridges” holding mucus together.
Mucus becomes:
• Thinner
• Less viscous
• Easier to cough up
2. Biofilm Disruptor
• Interfering with bacterial adhesion
• Can make bacteria more vulnerable to antibiotics
3. Reduce Oxidative Stress
• Neutrophil activation
• Glutathione precursor
• Supports recovery
• Can reduce inflammation by NF-kB activation
